Ian Clark Bautista and Eumir Felix Marcial assured the Philippines of at least a bronze medal after winning their opening bouts Sunday in the boxing competitions of the Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games.

Bautista beat hometown bet Abdul Salam Kasim on points in the 52 kg flyweight category while Marcial won via unanimous decision over Vietnam’s Nguyen Manh Chong in the 75 kg middleweight class to reach the semifinals.

Mario Fernandez stopped Myanmar’s Maung Nge to reach the quarterfinals of the 56 kg bantamweight division to highlight an impressive first day for Filipino boxers in the Malaysian capital.

Bautista and Marcial seek berths in the gold medal bout on Tuesday while Fernandez eyes a semis slot Monday.

The other three pugs of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines also made their debuts Monday.
