Fernandez, Marcial, Marvin Gain SEAG Finals
Mario Fernandez, Eumir Felix Marcial and John Marvin gained berths in the finals of the Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games boxing competitions after winning their respective semifinal bouts Tuesday a the MiTEC Hall 8.
Fernandez beat Cambodia’s Nat Siek Nin in the 56 kg bantamweight division, Marcial scored a first round technical knockout over Malaysia’s Indran Ramakrishnan in the 75 kg middleweight category and Marvin overcame veteran Anavat Thongkrathok of Thailand in the 81 kg light heavyweight class.
Veteran Charly Suarez and Ian Clark Bautista, however, were defeated by Thai opponents in the semifinals.
Suarez lost to fellow Rio Olympian Wuttichai Masuk in the 64 kg light welterweight and Bautista, who took the gold in the 2015 edition in Singapore, was beaten by Tanes Ongjunta in the 52 kg flyweight.
The three boxers of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines shoot for gold Thursday, with Fernandez and Marcial facing Thai opponents.
Fernandez faces Chatchai Butdee and Marcial takes on Pathomsak Kuttiya with a shot at defending the gold he won two years ago.
Marvin, on the other hand, looks to complete his maiden SEA Games appearance on a winning note against Adil Hafidz Bin Mohamed Pauzi of host Malaysia.
Fernandez outclassed his Cambodian foe to earn a 5-0 score from the judges, Marcial sent his hometown foe to the canvass followed a standing eight count that forced the referee to stop the fight with a under a minute left in the first round while Marvin overcame a slugfest with the smaller Anavat to win on points.
